HSEL Fall Preseason Begins!

Updated: Sep 25, 2023

Editor's note: The following newsletter, originally published on 9/18, has been updated on 9/25.

The High School Esports League Fall Season is open for competition! Major and Training Grounds queues are open for preseason practice this week, and the qualifying rounds for HSEL Premier begin today. We encourage all schools to compete in at least one preseason match to ensure your students are familiar with the queue system and how to launch the games. The regular season begins October 2nd. If your school isn’t fully registered, it is not too late! Registration never closes for Major and Training Grounds competitions.

Match-day Support?

Before your first match, we encourage you to view the following two videos with your students: Match Day Protocol and Understanding the Queue System. If you need help in real-time, the best place to start is the “Chat” bubble at the bottom right corner of every page. You will be provided with two options: we recommend using the live chat for questions that require an immediate response, or filing a ticket when asking questions that are not time-sensitive or disputing the outcome of a match.

Platform and Competition Updates

We have continued to make changes to our platform and league rules in pursuit of the best student experience possible. Here are some notable changes:

  • VALORANT: Game scores will automatically be imported to the match page 5-10 minutes after the conclusion of the match! If your match page does not display a score after 15 minutes, please contact support.

  • Minecraft Survival Games: We have released a number of updates- upgraded anti-cheat, improved moderation tools and player reporting (“/report”), and improved reconnecting.

  • Spectating: Many games have had their spectating rules updated. Please be sure to read the rules thoroughly before setting up a broadcast using a spectator.

  • Game connections: Increased leniency for students who change their in-game name but forget to update their competition Game Connection, especially in cases where the game account can be verified (e.g. Epic ID, Riot ID).

  • UPDATED – Counter-Strike 2: Although there is no release date set for CS2, the developers implied it may launch Wednesday. We are canceling this week’s preseason queues. Pending the game releasing Wednesday, we anticipate scheduling “preseason” queues for October 2nd, and beginning the regular season on October 10th. More information will follow once the game is released.

  • Mario Kart™ 8 Deluxe: In response to coach feedback, we have modified the rules to expand matches to be a best of 3 circuits and eliminate computer-controlled racers.
